- Recommended storage temperature: ambient, below 30°C
- Avoid dust formation and inhalation
- Use gloves, dust mask, and safety goggles during bulk handling
- Avoid contact with eyes and prolonged skin contact (alkaline material)
- Ensure adequate ventilation in working area
- Wash hands thoroughly after handling
Safety
- Alkaline substance – may cause skin and eye irritation
- Dust may irritate respiratory tract
- Avoid inhalation of dust
- Avoid direct contact with eyes and prolonged skin contact
- Use gloves, dust mask, and safety goggles during handling.
- In case of eye contact: Rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes
- In case of skin contact: Wash with water
- In case of ingestion (large quantity): Seek medical advice
Industry Wise Application
House Hold, Cleaning & Laundry
- Water Softener:It precipitates calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, allowing soaps and detergents to foam and clean more effectively.
- Laundry Booster:Added to laundry to boost detergent performance, remove grease, oil stains, and odors from clothes.
- General Household Cleaner:Used to clean floors, tiles, sinks, and kitchen surfaces, particularly for removing heavy grease.
Glass Manufacturing (Largest Industrial User)
- Fluxing Agent:It acts as a flux for silica (SiO2), lowering the melting point of sand from over 1,700°C to around 1,500°C.
- Soda-Lime Glass:Essential for making bottles, windows, and light bulbs.
Chemical Industry
- Raw Material:Used to produce other sodium compounds like sodium silicate (water glass), sodium phosphate, sodium borate (borax), and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda).
- pH Adjuster/Buffer:Acts as a cost-effective, safer alternative to sodium hydroxide for adjusting acidity in chemical reactions.
Pulp & Paper Industry
- Pulping Process:Used in the sulfite process to separate lignin from cellulose fibers.
- De-inking:Used in the recycling process to remove ink from paper.
Water Treatment
- pH Control:Used in swimming pools and water treatment plants to raise pH levels and neutralize acidic water.
- Corrosion Protection:Prevents corrosion of water pipes by maintaining alkaline conditions.
Food & Personal Care
- Food Additive (E500):Acts as an acidity regulator, stabilizer, and raising agent. It is notably used in the production of Japanese ramen noodles (kansui) to give them a chewy texture.
- Toothpaste Formulation:Used as a foaming agent and abrasive in some toothpaste brands.
Textile & Dyeing
- Dye Fixative:Acts as a mordant in reactive dyeing to ensure proper chemical bonding of dyes with cellulose (plant) fibers.
- Scouring Agent:Used to remove impurities, natural oils, and waxes from raw fabrics.
Other Application
- Brick Industry:Utilized as a wetting agent to reduce the amount of water needed for extruding clay.
- Metallurgy:Used in the froth flotation process to maintain a favorable pH.
- Photography:Used as a pH regulator in film developing agents.
