Industry Wise Application
Industrial Chemical Manufacturing
- Refrigerant Production:The most prominent use is as a precursor in the production of Chlorodifluoromethane (HCFC-22 or Freon 22), a refrigerant used in air conditioners and large-scale freezers.
- Fluoropolymer Production:It is utilized as an intermediate in manufacturing polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), commonly known as Teflon, and other fluorinated plastics.
- Pharmaceutical Synthesis:Used as a raw material or solvent in the production of various drugs, antibiotics, vitamins, and flavors.
- Pesticide Formulations:Acts as a reagent and solvent in the production of agricultural chemicals, including fumigants like chloropicrin
Solvent Applications
- Industrial Solvent:Because it dissolves a wide range of organic compounds, it is used to extract oils, fats, grease, rubber, wax, resins, and alkaloids.
- Dry Cleaning & Cleaning Agents:Formerly used in laundries as a spot remover and in industries for degreasing machinery.
- Manufacturing Processes:Used in the preparation of adhesives, floor polishes, and artificial silk.
Laboratory & Scientific Applications
- Laboratory Solvent:A common solvent used in analytical chemistry and organic synthesis.
- DNA/RNA Isolation:Mixed with phenol in molecular biology for separating nucleic acids during extraction.
- Spectroscopy:Pure chloroform is used as a solvent in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and NMR analysis (as deuterated chloroform – CDCL3)
- Preservation:Used for preserving biological specimens in histology and analytical chemistry.
Medical Applications
- Anaesthesia:Historically, it was extensively used as an inhalation anaesthetic in surgeries (often mixed with ether).
- Dentistry:Occasionally used in dentistry for dissolving gutta-percha during root canal treatments.
- Note: These uses have been largely discontinued due to severe toxicity and carcinogenicity
Other Uses
- Industrial Intermediate:Used to synthesize dyes and in the rubber industry.
- Indirect Food Additive:Included in some food packaging materials as an adhesive component.
- Entomology:Historically used as a killing agent in insect collecting
