Industry Wise Application
Industrial & Chemical Production
- Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM):The largest use of acetic acid is producing VAM, which is further polymerized to make paints, adhesives, coatings, and packaging materials.
- Acetic Anhydride:Used to produce cellulose acetate, a component in photographic film, cigarette filters, and textiles.
- Ester Production:Used to manufacture ethyl acetate and butyl acetate, which are widely used as solvents for varnishes, paints, and coatings.
- Terephthalic Acid (TPA):Utilized as a solvent in the production of TPA, which is the raw material for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics.
- Rubber Manufacturing:Employed in the coagulation process during the production of rubber.
Food Industry
- Vinegar Production:Acts as the primary component of vinegar (typically 4-8% solution) used as a condiment.
- Food Preservation:Used as a preservative (additive E260) to prevent microbial growth and extend the shelf life of pickles, sauces, and canned goods.
- pH Regulation:Used to adjust acidity in cheese, dairy products, and sauces.
Textile Industry
- Dyeing and Printing:Utilized as an acidifying agent to fix dyes onto fabrics, ensuring better color retention.
- Fabric Production: Used in the manufacturing of synthetic fibers like rayon.
Household & Cleaning Application
- Descaling:Due to its acidity, it is an effective agent for removing limescale, mineral deposits, and rust from household appliances, glassware, and surfaces.
- Disinfectant:Acts as a natural cleaner and sanitizer, particularly for cleaning pet stains or in kitchens.
Pharmaceutical & Medical Uses
- Medication Synthesis:Used as a raw material in the production of medicines, most notably aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid).
- Antiseptic/Treatment:Diluted acetic acid (1-5%) is used as an antiseptic, such as in ear drops to treat ear infections (otitis externa).
- Cervical Cancer Screening:Used in the visualization of the cervix to identify precancerous lesions in developing countries.
Agriculture & Other
- Herbicides:High-concentration acetic acid is used as an environmentally friendly, organic herbicide to kill weeds.
- Laboratory Reagent:Employed in chemical laboratories as a solvent, pH buffer, and in chromatography.
- Photography:Used in stop baths during the development of photographic films.
